Abstract Landscape

14 November 2015 – 10 January 2016

The colour, form and movement of nature are central to this selection of art and design from the 1950s and ’60s.

Drawn from the Whitworth’s collection, works by artists such as Bryan Wynter, Barbara Hepworth, William Scott, Peter Lanyon, Gillian Ayres and Roger Hilton reflect an extraordinary era in British abstract art. As many artists developed their own abstract language, the British landscape continued to provide inspiration.

In these paintings, drawings, sculptures and designs we see the flicker of light across water, muted organic tones, swift changes in weather and the natural processes of flow and erosion.

You’ll be able to see William Scott’s textiles Skara Brae and Skaill at the Whitworth’s exhibition, plus also Gouache: Abstract in the gallery downstairs.
