23 October – 11 December 2010
Tom Alexander, who died in 2000, moved to the Isle of Arran in 1947. After having successfully set up a shop with his brother, he wanted to do something ‘public spirited’ and joined the Officers Emergency Army Reserve. In return, the Officers Emergency Army Reserve paid him around £40 a year. With this money, and his wife Catherine’s encouragement, he wrote directly to artists whose work he admired, such as William Scott, to purchase a work of art annually.
The collection he managed to acquire is currently being exhibited at the Talbot Gallery until 11 December 2010.
