Approaching Thunder: 1940s British Prints And Drawings

Portrait of a Girl, 1948
25 February – 19 November 2017

Opening today at The Hepworth Wakefield, Approaching Thunder: 1940s British Prints and Drawings is an exhibition displaying prints and drawings by leading modern British artists including Henry Moore, Graham Sutherland, John Piper and William Scott. This new exhibition showcases an exceptionally fertile period in British art production during the 20th century.

Produced during 1939 – 50, an era of rationing and uncertainty, the artists all turned to the inexpensive medium of paper to express the difficult times in which they lived. A number of illustrated books will show how modernist artists used low-cost auto-lithography to circulate their work across a broad social spectrum.
