In 1953 whilst in New York William Scott met Rothko, the first British artist to do so. They became close friends and when Rothko came to Britain in 1959 he stayed with William Scott’s family in their cottage in Somerset. Photographs taken by James Scott during this stay and letters between William Scott and Mark Rothko are some of the archive materials being lent by the William Scott Foundation to be exhibited in the Whitechapel Gallery’s exhibition Rothko in Britain. Marking the 50th anniversary of Mark Rothko’s first solo exhibition in Britain held at the Whitechapel Gallery in 1961.

The curator of this exhibition is Dr. Nayia Yiakoumaki, who visited the William Scott Foundation to research on the links Rothko built with fellow artists in Britain.
