Exploring The Vessel

[Still Life with Bowl and Olives], 1950
19 – 23 September 2017

Exploring the Vessel will focus on the works of a painter and a potter. The painter is William Scott, a prominent and important figure of British Art in the post-war period, and the potter is Ashley Howard, a leading contemporary ceramicist.  Showing paintings, drawings and works on paper by Scott and new ceramic pieces by Howard, the exhibition will aim to look at how both artists have engaged with the vessel, ancient forms that are at once functional and beautiful. Scott’s painted and drawn bowls, pans, cups and jugs will be displayed alongside Howard’s porcelain vessels, showing how both artists have explored the practical and aesthetic qualities of these articles, introducing them to the painted and actual spaces around us.

The exhibition will take place in a private house in Holland Park, London, and will allow visitors to view and engage with the works in a more domestic environment than the usual gallery format.
